Alvin?s has been a staple of the Cass Corridor since it opened about thirty years ago. Alvin Stilman first opened the building's doors in 1968 as a delicatessen. Under Alvin's ownership and the management of a man by the name of Barnie Surowitz, Alvin's became famous for its Sunday brunch, known as 'The Church.' In the early 80's, Alvin's stopped serving 'The Church,' and became 'Alvin's Twilight Bar,' with live music acts. Throughout the decade, the bar grew to be an integral part of the Cass Corridor scene, and hosted many popular acts including Shadowfax (Alvin's house band), Mitch Ryder, The Layabouts & The Detroit All-Stars. The current incarnation of Alvin's is a great performance space with a large stage and a variety of acts encompassing techno/house, rap and rock.
